——— MAKING CHOICES
Transitioning Colors
Colors should transition seamlessly throughout your home. Avoid a rainbow of spaces that do not relate to one another. Instead use a similar color palate throughout and vary the emphasis of them from room to room.
Reflective Surfaces
Use reflective surfaces to attract light, expand space, and add a touch of glamour. In one of my past apartments, the curtains had tiny mirror pieces woven into the fabric. They caught the light day and night. In another I had a metallic foiled wallpaper which did the same. Small bits of reflection go a very long way.
Lighting is Jewelry
Some people collect art. I collect fixtures. A great fixture that brings daily happiness is worth every penny! Splurge on the best lighting you can find and install dimmers everywhere – remote controls are my favorite.
Storage is a Luxury
NYC living is forced downsizing. I sold my rowhouse in Baltimore to move into a shoe box-sized first apartment here, so I’ve lived it. Having a place for everything is key. Skip furniture as storage. Build it in instead. There is nothing better than functional storage that blends into the architecture of the room.
Use Reclaimed Materials
Make what’s old new again. Vintage architectural finds add history and character to any renovation. I’m always on the look out for interesting doors, windows and mantles to repurpose or recreate new. Furniture-wise I hunt for interesting shapes and styles and often recreate my favorites.
